Being Still When Your Mind Won't Quit

"Be still and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10
We’ve all read it. Maybe even underlined it. But have you ever actually tried to be still?
If you’re anything like me, that’s no easy task. My mind races even when my body is at rest. Let me give you a peek inside my brain (and maybe yours too).
I was on the patio with my tea, reading my Bible. The birds were singing, it was such a nice sound, minus the car sounds. Then I thought, I wish I could do my online therapy sessions out here... but the traffic noise is too loud. That reminded me of the camper my husband and I plan to put on our land—I could do my therapy out there, just birds, no cars.
Then, we’ll need Wi-Fi… and electricity.
Then I remembered—Oh! My husband asked me to sign a paper about the electric hookup! So, I got up, went inside, and signed the paper. My husband looked at me like, Why are you doing this in the middle of your Bible time? I tried to explain the rabbit trail, but he still looked baffled. But to me, it made total sense.
Can you relate?
If your mind works this way, then you know how hard it is to sit quietly with God. I try all the time—and often fail because my mind is constantly running. But here’s a simple practice that’s been helping me slow down and actually be still.
· I close my eyes, bow my head, and take a few deep breaths. With each breath, I let my shoulders relax and release whatever tension I’m carrying. Then I picture myself with the Father. Sitting at His feet, my head resting on His knee, and His hand gently stroking my hair. Every time I try to speak, I imagine Him lovingly shushing me, not because He doesn’t want to hear what I have to say, but because He knows what I really need—Him, and just to be.
· Sometimes I picture sitting next to Jesus on a bench, my head on His shoulder.
· And on the really hard days, I see myself standing in front of Him, head pressed into His chest, with His arms wrapped around me. Just holding me.
These images help me quiet down and actually know that He is God. It reminds me that I’m loved, seen, and safe in His hands.
When I picture doing this, something shifts. I begin to believe again that He is God—and I’m not. He’s got it under control.
If you’re a mom, you get this. Our kids used to think their world was falling apart over a broken toy or canceled playdate, but we knew it would be okay. God sees us the same way—He cares deeply but sees the full picture.
That’s why being still is powerful. It puts us back in our place—not in a diminishing way, but in a freeing one. He’s God. He’s got this. And we can rest.
And if you’ve never known that kind of peace before—if you don’t have a relationship with God—please don’t wait another minute.
Here’s a simple prayer to begin that journey:
Dear Jesus,
I know that I need You. I want to experience Your presence and know—really know—that You love me. I confess that I’ve been trying to do life on my own, keeping track of my good deeds and bad ones, hoping it all balances out. But You don’t ask for my performance—you want my surrender. Please forgive my sins. I believe You died for me, and that You rose again. Right now, I give You my life. Be my Savior and Lord. Help me become the person You created me to be.
In Your Name, Amen.
Friend, He’s closer than you think. Even in the noise. Especially in the stillness.
