Faith, Doubts, and My Scenic Route Brain

If you're a woman reading this blog post, chances are you’ve got a scenic route brain like me—you know, the kind that starts in one place and somehow ends up signing utility contracts. Let me explain.
The other morning I was out on the patio reading my Bible. The birds were chirping, the sun was shining—it was one of those beautiful moments that make you want to just stay outside forever. I had therapy sessions coming up that day and thought, Wouldn’t it be lovely to do sessions out here with the birds singing in the background?
But then... traffic. The road noise reminded me that, while birds are cute, loud trucks are not. Which made me think of the land Jeff and I own—no traffic out there! I imagined myself sitting outside the camper, sipping coffee, doing sessions with zero distractions. Perfect.
Except... I'd need internet. And to get internet, we’d need electricity. That reminded me I had to go inside right then and sign the electric paperwork for our property—before I forgot. Again.
When Circuit Brain Meets Scripture
Fast forward to this morning. I was reading Matthew 21 and came across this:
“Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen. And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”– Matthew 21:21–22
Whew. That one hit me right between the eyes.
It made me think about my faith… and my doubts. And let’s be real, I have plenty of them. Most of my doubts start with the same old lie: I’m not {fill in the blank} enough, so why would God do anything big through me?
But this passage got me thinking. Jesus told the disciples they could move mountains if they believed. And in my therapy sessions, I often ask clients, “Do your actions show that you actually believe what you say you believe?”
Well, today that question came right back at me—and let me tell you, I didn’t love the answer. Cue the circuit brain again:
What doubts do I need to let go of?
How do I even do that?
What do I need to know about God to trust Him that much?
When Doubts Feel Big, Remember: God Is Bigger
The answer isn’t to try harder. The answer is to know who God is. The more I know about His character, the smaller my doubts seem. So let’s take a look:
1. He Created the Heavens and the Earth — And He’s Not Overwhelmed
“Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”– Jeremiah 32:17
If God can spin galaxies into place, He can handle your Tuesday. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing intimidates Him. He’s not pacing heaven stressed out about your to-do list.
2. His Power Goes Beyond What We Can Understand
“And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”– Job 26:14
Have you ever stood at the edge of the ocean and just felt tiny? That’s a sliver of His power. We’re seeing just the “fringe,” and even that blows us away.
3. His Ways Are Higher Than Ours
“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord...”– Isaiah 55:8–9
Sometimes we don’t get it—and that’s okay. He’s God. His perspective is different. And He’s working even when we can’t see how the pieces fit together.
4. He Rules Over Everything — and Nothing Escapes His Notice
“Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.”– Isaiah 66:1
He’s not distant. He’s reigning in majesty and walking close with you. He sees the whole story—and He hasn’t missed a thing.
5. He Can Do More Than We Ask or Imagine
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think…”– Ephesians 3:20–21
Yes, even more than that wild dream you're afraid to say out loud. He's not limited by our imagination. He’s writing something better than we can dream up.
Do We Really Believe What We Say We Believe?
Think about it—when you sit in a chair, you believe it’ll hold you. You don’t analyze it, test it, or second-guess it. You just sit.
What if we trusted God like that?
This doesn’t mean that if you ask God for a Corvette He’s going to drop one in your driveway. But it does mean you can trust Him to be good, wise, and generous. It means you can ask boldly and believe fully.
A Few Questions to Sit With
Let these verses soak in, and then ask yourself:
If these verses are true about God, what doubts do I have that He can’t handle?
What would it look like in my life to let go of those doubts?
What do I have to fear when I serve a God this big?
What dreams do I have that feel too big or impossible?
A Prayer for the Believer
Lord, I believe—but sometimes my doubts feel louder than my faith. I know You are big. I know You are good. But life has left me questioning and unsure.
Today, I bring You my doubts. I don’t want to carry them anymore. I lay them at Your feet and ask You to replace them with confidence in who You are. Help me believe what is true about You—that You are powerful, wise, and kind. That You see me, hear me, and care about the details of my life.
Grow my faith, Lord. Help me live like I believe You are who You say You are. Teach me to trust You with the big things, the small things, and everything in between. I want to live boldly, pray boldly, and love boldly—because I serve a God who can move mountains.
Thank You for not giving up on me. I choose to believe You’re working, even when I can’t see it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Prayer for Salvation
If you're reading this and wondering where your faith even begins—maybe you've never fully trusted Jesus with your life—this is your moment. He loves you, He’s big enough to save you, and He’s ready to walk with you.
God, I believe that You are big—bigger than my doubts, my past, and my failures. I believe that You created the heavens and the earth, and that You created me on purpose, for a purpose.
I confess that I’ve tried to do life on my own, and I’ve fallen short. I need You. I believe that Jesus is Your Son, that He died for my sins, and that He rose again to give me new life.
Today, I ask You to forgive me, to come into my life, and to be my Savior and my Lord. Teach me to walk in faith, to trust Your character, and to follow You all the days of my life. I surrender to You, and I receive Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
