Trusting God’s Word Over Feelings

ree

Lately, I’ve been wrestling with facts versus feelings.

I feel like God isn’t listening—but the fact is that He’s always with me.

I feel like my work isn’t making a difference—but God says, “Be strong and do not lose courage, for there is reward for your work” (2 Chronicles 15:7).

I feel like I’m doing all of this on my own—but Scripture reminds me, “For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

There are so many moments when my emotions say one thing, but God’s Word says another. In my head, I know the Bible is true and that my feelings don’t always tell the truth—yet somehow, my heart still believes what I feel.

So, I’ve been asking myself: How do I start believing what the Bible says instead of what my emotions say?

What I’ve discovered is that it’s a choice. I have to choose to believe the Bible. But to really believe it, I have to know the Author.

Knowing the Author

When I was in college, I took a research class that taught me the importance of checking your sources. You had to make sure they were reliable before trusting what they said. The same principle applies to Scripture.

If I want to trust what the Bible says, I need to know the One who wrote it—not just who I feel He is, but who He says He is.

Here’s who I’ve come to know God to be through His Word and in my own life.

💖 God Is Love

  • 1 John 4:8 (NASB) — “The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

  • Romans 5:8 — “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

  • Psalm 86:15 — “But You, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy and truth.”

When I think about love, I think of it as an action. My love language is gifts and acts of service—so when Jeff buys me flowers or fills up my car on a cold morning, I feel loved.

God’s love is like that, but infinitely greater. The Bible says that God is love and that He shows love. He sent His Son to die for me—to pay a price I could never pay. That’s incredible love. And Jesus didn’t die for me once I got my life together; He died knowing every one of my sins and loving me anyway.

🌿 God Is Faithful

  • Deuteronomy 7:9 — “Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who love Him and keep His commandments.”

  • Lamentations 3:22–23 — “The Lord’s acts of mercy indeed do not end, for His compassions do not fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

  • 2 Timothy 2:13 — “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.”

The word faithful means trustworthy and unchanging—never breaking promises and never giving up. That’s who God is.

If you’ve heard my story on Encounters at the Well, you know some of the choices I’ve made and the pain I’ve walked through. But through every season, God has never stopped loving me. Even when I wasn’t faithful to Him, He remained faithful to me.

When I read the prayers I’ve written beside verses in my Bible, I can see His fingerprints—His faithfulness in every answered prayer, every unexpected blessing, every moment of grace.

🌾 God Is Our Provider and Sustainer

  • Philippians 4:19 — “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

  • Psalm 23:1–3 — “The Lord is my shepherd, I will not be in need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul.”

  • Matthew 6:31–33 — “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.”

When I look back on my life, I can see God’s provision woven through every chapter. He’s supplied all that I’ve ever needed—often in ways I never expected.

After the loss of our son, I tried to return to work, but the stress of a law office while still grieving became too heavy. I eventually left that job, and on my very first day at home, I felt the weight of sadness pressing down on me.

Then, out of the blue, one of my mentors, Darlene Leatherwood, called. She had no idea I’d left my job or how deeply I was struggling that day. But God knew. He prompted her to call, and through that simple act of obedience, He reminded me that I wasn’t forgotten.

That’s the kind of God we serve—one who sees, sustains, and provides exactly what we need at exactly the right time.

🌻 Choosing Truth Over Feelings

So today, I choose to believe what the Bible says—because I know the One who wrote it.

I’ve seen His love. I’ve experienced His faithfulness. I’ve witnessed His provision. And because of that, I can trust His Word, even when my feelings tell me something different.

When life gets confusing or my emotions start shouting louder than truth, I go back to what I know—God’s Word is unchanging, and His character is good.

Even when I don’t feel it, He is faithful.

Even when I can’t see it, He is working.

And even when everything else shifts, His Word remains steady and true.
